AF Exam- An Introduction

Indian Air Force invites ONLINE application for AF Exam 2019 from UNMARRIED MALE INDIAN CITIZENS (citizens of Nepal can also apply) for the selection test that will be conducted from 14 March 2019 to 17 March 2019 to join as Airmen in Group ‘X’ Trades (except Education Instructor Trade) and Group ‘Y’ {Except Automobile Technician, GTI, IAF (P), IAF(S) and Musician} Trades..

 The AF has 3 stages of selection:

  • Online test
  • Physical Fitness Ability Test
  • Medical Examination

AF Exam Pattern:

Phase – I – Online Test

The online test will consist of objective type question from various subjects. This paper will be consist subjects according to the post candidate is applying for i.e. for Group X or Group Y.

The candidate who will clear Physical Fitness Ability Test- II will be issued an appointment letter to appear in Medical examination at respective ASC's conducted by air Force Medical Team.

AF 2019 Exam Syllabus

 Each paper will be covering questions from the following topics:-

 English: Passage, Grammar I, Grammar II, Vocabulary, Narration (Direct and Indirect), Voice (Active and Passive), Jumbled Sentences.

Physics: Physical World and Measurement, Kinematics, Laws of Motion, Work, Energy and Power, Motion of System of Particles and Rigid Body, Gravitation, Properties of Bulk Matter, Thermodynamics, Behavior of Perfect Gases & Kinetic Theory of Gases, Oscillations & Waves, Electrostatics, Current Electricity, Magnetic Effects of Current and Magnetism, Electromagnetic, Induction and Alternating Current, Electro Magnetic Waves, Optics,  Dual Nature of Matter and Radiation, Atoms and Nuclei, Electronic Devices, Communication Systems.

Mathematics: Sets, Relations & functions, Trigonometric Functions, Inverse Trigonometric Functions, Complex Number & Quadratic Equations, Linear Inequalities, Mathematical Induction,  Permutations & Combinations, Binomial Theorem, Sequences and Series, Cartesian system of rectangular co-ordinates, Straight lines & family of lines, Circles and family of circles, Conic sections,  Three-dimensional Geometry, Matrices and Determinants, Limit and Continuity, Differentiation, Applications of Derivatives, Indefinite integrals, Definite Integrals, Applications of the Integrals, Differential Equations, Mathematical Reasoning, Linear Programming, Vector, Probability, Statistics.


A. Reasoning (Verbal and Non- Verbal): Numerical series, Distance and Direction sense Test, Mathematical Operations, Number, Ranking & Time Sequence Test, Assign Artificial Values to Mathematical Digit, Inserting Correct Mathematical sign, Human relation, Coding & Decoding, Odd man out, Mutual relation problems, Tallest, youngest relations, Dictionary woods, Analogy, Non- Verbal Reasoning, Number coding, Number Puzzle.

B. Mathematics: Ratio and Proportion, Average, LCM & HCF, Profit and Loss, Time, Distance and Speed, Percentage, Simplifications of Numbers, Fractions, Area of triangle, Square and Rectangle, Surface Area and volume of Cuboids, Cylinder, Cone and Sphere, Probability, Simple Trigonometry.

Note: Negative Marking is also application in AF written Examination. For every incorrect response, 1 mark will be deducted.

For every correct answer candidate will get 3 marks. No negative marking is applicable on unattempted /left question.

Eligibility Criteria for AF Entrance Exam

There is a pre defined set of criteria for candidates to apply for Group X & Group Y AF exam. Following have a detailed transcription of the same.

Nationality: Citizen of India, Citizen of Nepal

Marital Status: Unmarried

Gender: Male

GROUP ‘X’ Trades (Except Education Instructor)

Age Limit: 17 t0 21 years

The upper age limit as on exact date of enrolment should be 21 years.

That means, 19 January 1999 and 01 January 2003 (both days inclusive) born candidates are eligible to apply.

Educational Qualification:

Passed Intermediate / 10+2 / equivalent examination (subjects: Mathematics, Physics, and English) and having minimum of 50% aggregate marks and 50% marks in English.


3 years Engineering Diploma Course(any stream), from a Government, recognized Polytechnic Institute with 50% aggregate marks, and 50% marks in English.

Note: English mandatory for every diploma/degree/Intermediate.

Group ‘X’ (Except Education Instructor Trade).

Age: 20 - 25 Years

Education Qualification:

(i) B.A (with English) or B.Sc with any of these: Physics/ Psychology/ Chemistry/ Mathematics/ IT / Computer Science/ Statistics as one subject included or BCA (minimum 50% marks.)

(ii) B. Ed degree (minimum of 50% aggregate marks) from a Government recognized institute.

Age: 20 - 28 Years

Education Qualification:

(i) MA in English/ Psychology or M.Sc in Mathematics/ Computer Science/ Physics/ Statistics/ IT or MCA with 50% aggregate marks.

(ii) B. Ed degree from a government recognized institute with a minimum of 50% aggregate marks

Note: Graduation/Post-Graduation/B.Ed programs should be recognized by UGC/ NCTE/ Acceptable accreditation authorization.

GROUP ‘Y’ Trades (Except Med Asst and Musician)


Note: The maximum age limit on date of enrolment is 21 years.

Age: 17- 21 Years

Should have passed Class 10 + 2/Intermediate/Equivalent exam from an education Institute listed in Council of Boards for School Education (COBSE), in any stream/subjects with minimum 50% aggregate marks and 50% marks in English.

GROUP ‘Y: Med Asst Trade

Note: The upper age limit as on the date of enrolment should be 21 years.

Age Limit: 17- 21 Years

Education Qualification:

Passed 10+2 / Intermediate / equivalent exam with Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English with a minimum of combined 50% marks, and 50% marks in English.

GROUP ‘Y’: Musician Trade

Age limit: 17 - 25 Years

Education Qualification:

(i) Passed Matriculation /10th class or equivalent from any Government authorized School/Boards.

(ii) Proficient in playing at least one of the following musical instruments: Trumpet / Bass / Violin / Saxophone / Clarinet / Euphonium / Jazz-Drum / Piccolo / Bass Trombone / Key Board / Guitar / Sarod / Viola / Cello / Contra Bass (String Bass).
